3 Essentials to Combat Puffiness Commonly Associated with Hypothyroidism

10% of the world's population lives with a condition known as hypothyroidism. Half of those individuals are living with the condition undiagnosed. Unfortunately, the number of individuals developing this condition only continues to grow. Hypothyroidism is a condition where the pituitary gland slows its production of TSH (thyroid stimulating hormone). This causes the thyroid to produce less of its hormones, T3 and T4. Inadequate production of T3 and T4 makes it a struggle for the body to perform essential functions. These functions include digesting food, regulating our metabolism, and producing energy.

Hypothyroidism tends to produce unwanted symptoms throughout the entire body. Many symptoms are subtle, like tiredness and fatigue, which are often masked by the hustle and bustle of modern-day society. One of the hallmark symptoms occurring with both hypothyroidism and its autoimmune counterpart, Hashimoto's, is inflammation. This can lead to facial puffiness that is often very noticeable in those who have either form of the condition.

So, what do you do besides making nutrition and lifestyle changes to decrease the puffiness? Stepping up your skincare regimen by including products with natural anti-inflammatory ingredients is a must. Three of my favorite anti-inflammatory ingredients are castor oil, chamomile, and calendula.  In this blog post, I will share the anti-inflammatory benefits of each ingredient, as well as products I use from Skin Essence Organics that contain these amazing inflammation fighters.

Castor Oil

If you didn’t know, castor oil comes from pressing the seed of a castor plant. These plants are most commonly found in Africa, South America, and India. After pressing, the oil has many different purposes.  In the skincare world, castor oil is well known for its moisturizing effects. Castor oil acts as a moisturizer on its own but is often combined with other ingredients.

Why is hydration for the skin important? - Our body is 60% water.  Water is an important component of our whole-body wellness.  If we become dehydrated, our bodies begin to hold on to what little water we have.  This often causes our skin to puff or bloat. Those with hypothyroidism, or the autoimmune type, experience significant effects from dehydration. If the body is not properly hydrated, the thyroid will slow down even more.  This only exacerbates symptoms like tiredness, fatigue, and of course, puffiness.

Lucky for you, Skin Essence Organics offers so many amazing products that support rehydration!  Two of their most popular products, E Cream and Sweet Orange contain castor oil. E Cream is very versatile and is used for everything, hence the e. It helps rehydrate dry skin, eliminates the itch from sunburned skin, and even reduces redness from rosacea. Sweet Orange is popular for dry lips but can also rehydrate the skin on your hands and body.

Chamomile

Tea drinkers or not, most of us are familiar with chamomile tea.  This herb is well known for its ability to calm the body, making it easier to sleep. What is less talked about though is its ability to reduce inflammation.

Throughout history, chamomile has been used to treat inflammation. This is because of the flavinoids within, which naturally possess anti-inflammatory properties. Its inclusion in the Pure facial cleanser provides the face with a soothing way to naturally calm inflammation.

Calendula

If I had to guess, I would say this third and final ingredient is the least familiar.  Calendula is a yellow and orange flowering plant sourced in many places around the world. The extract from this flower contains antioxidants, which protect our cells from harmful free radicals. These free radicals can cause disease within our body over time. Antioxidants support the rehydration of the skin, therefore decreasing the appearance of puffiness.

Skin Essence Organics has several products that include this powerful extract. One of my favorites is Soothe, a facial moisturizer. This oil-based serum can hydrate the skin much faster than a liquid applicant. This results in quicker, more noticeable results when it comes to decreasing puffiness.

Ready to say goodbye to puffiness?

If you’re tired of waking up and feeling puffy day after day, you need to add Skin Essence Organics products to your daily skincare routine. In addition to the three ingredients mentioned, many of their products include other anti-inflammatory ingredients, such as comfrey, galbanum, nettle leaf, and vitamin E.

Rest assured that you are getting the highest quality skin care products. Additionally, you are also supporting animal advocacy efforts. Skin Essence Organics not only sources organic, vegan ingredients but also is a cruelty-free brand.
